Showcasing amazing play in North East schools
- Date December 10, 2025
OPAL schools have one very important thing in common — they all provide some of the best playtimes in the country. Two such schools are Roseberry Primary and Nursery School in Chester-le-Street and Blackford CE Primary School in Carlisle, who recently opened their doors to more than 20 headteachers to show what is possible when you prioritise playtime.
So, what happens when you make playtime a key part of the school day?
The impact of better playtimes
Children in OPAL schools experience a wide range of benefits. OPAL children are significantly more active, self-report improved mental health, and can’t wait to come to school because they have so much fun. There are many benefits for schools too — from increased teaching time, improved staff wellbeing, and up to 80% less reported accidents.
What schools say about OPAL
OPAL schools are proud of their playtimes and keen to share their OPAL journey with others. Here are some of the things that North East schools have said about the programme.
“OPAL is one of the most important aspects of our school’s provision. Children of all ages access it every playtime, every day.” Sarah Beveridge, Headteacher, Leyburn Primary School
“OPAL has become a huge part of our school culture. Children are extremely appreciative of having it and say they feel very lucky.” Angela Brown, Deputy Headteacher, Thomlinson Junior School
“Providing a rich play environment allows the children to develop skills and evaluate their own risks. Our playground is a hive of activity, which aids the well-being of our children.” Caroline Hodgson, Headteacher, Esh Winning Primary School
