Did you know 20% of a school day is playtime?

Schools who take a strategic approach to play see transformational results in behaviour, aptitude for learning, social skills, increased physical activity levels, resilience and inclusion.

Playful Schools provides an online presence for OPAL North East which is the licensed delivery partner of the OPAL Outdoor Play and Learning programme OPAL.

If you are looking to improve playtime or a business able to support a playful school across the north east region, we would love to hear from you.
Through changing culture and practise, schools are now committed to investing in play more than ever. Here you will find inspiring stories from schools who have transformed playtime and are overjoyed at the positive impact this is having across key areas within school.

Celebrating and sharing play across the North East

By sharing play news, advice and guidance from across the region, we inspire schools and their communities to prioritise play.

Connecting people for play

Through doing things like turning business waste into children’s treasure, we work with local communities and businesses to help them support play in schools.

Lingey House Primary School has spent the past 3 years developing their grounds and seen huge benefit from investing in play. The school recognizes play is not a nice to have, it is an essential part of the school curriculum and is taken seriously.

“Pupils engage extremely well with the extensive outdoor play and learning facilities. Social times are exciting and productive. Outdoor play and learning are strengths of the school.  The school teaches pupils to be independent , for example the school gives the pupils the tools to resolve conflict.  Pupils are taught to risk assess situations by asking,”will it hurt, will it break”. This learning helps pupils to play co operatively and safely.  Pupils make dens, play in the mud kitchen, play sport and perform.  Their resilience, creativity and problem solving abilities are highly developed.”
